The Steam Deck also emulates those same consoles easily (anecdotally, my Deck runs Tears of the Kingdom just as well as or better than an actual Switch), so I'd be surprised if the superior-spec'd Ally didn't.

I’m out of the loop, but I had no idea the Switch was already at what, from the tenor of this comment, would appear to be a Dreamcast level of rootedness. Is that the case?

I'm not sure what you mean by rootedness in this context. The Switch can be rooted to run custom software on official hardware (though I think it's difficult on the latest hardware and firmware revisions), but I don't root mine personally and don't know much about it. The state of rooting is pretty much entirely separate from the state of emulation, which is doing very well. There are currently two major Switch emulators that I'm aware of and they can both play thousands of Switch games just fine, with various tradeoffs and support for game mods.

Well, not completely different topics IIUC. You still need to root switches to extract the keys in order to decrypt the games. Maybe even for the dumping of the games and firmware as well, but not sure. IIUC Nintendo tries its best to blacklist any keys they find and switch consoles if they assume that the switch is rooted, etc.

I thought about buying myself a switch in the past, but the whole process to get control over your own device seems too annoying for me and there are enough non-Nintendo/Switch games out there that work well on a Steam Deck out-of-the-box.

The original switch revision had an unpatchable hardware vulnerability that let you run unsigned code from the bootrom. It's been broken since year one.

If you can find the video explaining how they did it (I guess it was presented at chaos computer club), it's a must see: very funny and enlightening ! (for a geek, that is)

Easily maybe, but very few PS3/360 games run well with the Steam Deck specs.

Many Switch games run well but not all of them.

What guide did you use to get TOTK to run that well on steam deck?

I just tried this on the latest Yuzu build publicly available. Works great! So much nicer to play on my Steam Deck rather than my switch!

I am not aware of any usable implementation of XBox 360 emulation.

Any time I've gone spelunking for them they were all just trojan horses waiting for the gullible to drive by.

I don't play any Xbox 360 games, but Xenia is the go to 360 emulator afaik.

Does it? It was pretty buggy when it launched, did they fix it already?

There have been reports of people now running Tears of the Kingdom at 4k/60 fps. Of course, that's on a PC.

Here's one article talking about it : https://www.dsogaming.com/news/nintendo-switch-emulator-yuzu...

They did! It only took about three or four days.

Kinda makes me regret starting it on the Switch... I might have to hack it to transfer the saves to my Deck.
