Yeah, and then he needs to test his site in Firefox. And then he needs to get rid of the "Donate $5" link. And then he needs to drop his dependency on ActiveX _AND_ Java. And then...

What's up with the images with white backgrounds on a blue webpage. And the old school style tables.

I am not a web designer. No money to hire one. I simply used a template from Dreamweaver. Isnt it pretty? with the sea.

The flame is juwo's logo.

Go to a website with a design you like and then bite the source code. That's a good way to start learning how to design.

The flame reminds me of the evil eye from the Lord of the Rings.

"drop his dependency on ActiveX _AND_ Java"

Yes, it is my top priority. But I have a day job to pay the bills, and no one else to help.

My business plan is that they will pay $5 to upgrade from Viewer to Editor.

Until it is in better shape, I am only asking for donations. Donate $5 helps people focus on a specific amount.

A very bad idea. I was shortly in the commercial software market, and nobody pays $5. It's too small to make it worth the bother of bringing out your credit card. Price $20 or above, else you won't have sales.

Here is my business model: NP will have two versions: The Editor and the Viewer. This is similar to Adobe Acrobat, which has the Publisher and the Reader. The Editor is full featured. For business users, a license fee of $150 will be charged for the Editor. It will not display advertisements. The Viewer has restricted functionality. It cannot create, nor add to the juwo indexes. It can only annotate or enrich existing indexes and share them.

The Viewer is free. It will carry advertisements that will be served dynamically on the landing page by a 3rd party advertisement server. Home users can upgrade the Viewer to the Editor for an online payment of $5. However it will still show advertisements.

Revenues are from three tracks:

License fee (free)

Consumer paying to upgrade from Viewer to Editor.

Banner advertisements ( e.g. Google Adsense)

Revenues per AV site = license fee + number of AV downloads percent upgrading to editor upgrade fee + revenue from banner advt.

see VC Fred Wilson's blog for calculation of banner advt. revenues for youtube.com which had 100M downloads per day and 19.8M unique visitors in June 2006. ($420K per day, 660K unique)

for a site with a free juwo license and only 1% of youtube's traffic. i.e. 1 million downloads

with only 1% upgrading, can potentially make $1.65M per year.

Unfortunately, right now all that is simply castles in the air.

Keep going: he responds to feedback.

And then he needs to stop using the "My First Webpage" style of links, "Click here", "Click here", "Click here". And then he needs to demote "(Note: No warranties nor liability, express or implied)." from being a banner headline. And then he needs to...

Oh, dear lord.

And perhaps remove the religious info from the "Company" page (http://juwo.com/company.html) -- it strikes me as unprofessional and out of place. You're entitled to your beliefs, but I can't see what you have to gain by advertising them on your corporate home page. Religion is a sensitive topic, and getting people to use your software is hard enough without offending them first.

I must confess, I am jealous that juwo is getting so much better feedback than I am :)

please see my reply above - to rms. comparing veotag with juwo.

karthik, please dont hijack this thread!

I promised God that when I started working on juwo it would be used for His glory and for my profit, and He gave me the subsequent ideas to make it stronger. So I am going to keep my end of the deal.

See, juwo, I + another YC user + the friggin w3 organization say the same thing:

http://news.ycombinator.com/comments?id=17339 & parents of this link, plus many more.

Ok, you win. I shall change the "Click here" for the demos to Download and Run

Did you actually play the demo? Why hasnt anyone actually played the demos?

Everyone is simply commenting on the website.

The demo needs to be simpler to access.

People are just not going to go through download/installation/browser configuration hoops.

So you've got to figure out how to make the demos run without "Java 1.5.X" (but not 1.6) on "Windows XP", using "only Windows Media Player".

That requirement list is just too restrictive.

I agree. Is the solution to rewrite it in Apollo Flash? (There may be the same problems that Java Web Start has had).

Listen, I've probably spent more time looking at your website than 99 percent of the people who've clicked on it. Try to understand this:

_I still haven't the first clue what it is you're selling_

Okay? The reason no one is playing with the demos is because the website itself is like unto cerberus the dog of hell, protecting the product from all who draw near.

Have ONE main webpage. Have this contain:

2-3 sentences that explain what the product does, and a use case. Example:

"auto-ebay-1000 is a tool to automate routine tasks performed by ebay sellers. If you have 50 items to sell, auto-ebay-1000 can upload them to ebay, track them, and alert you to bids"

Then have three links:

1) screen shots 2) Demo 3) How to buy

Look at a quasi use case that you have:

Do you feel, “Thoughts and ideas come to me at awkward times, unexpected places and not in neat order. I really wish there was an easier way for me to capture them".

...okay. The solution to that "problem" is: Pen and paper. Or a voice recorder. Is Juwo a voice recorder? Okay, fine: But an "unexpected place" is presumably one where I'm not at my computer. See? Your use case doesn't fit.

The problem is, juwo is a new concept. Also it can do about 5-8 different things. So there are about 13 use cases with demos listed.

How can I simplify further? I have tried my best.

I would like to discuss further your points.

0) Do you see the links to the screenshots? I didnt want to list them in the main page because that's another 300K in 3 images. Plus they take up a lot of space.

1) Pen and paper "There are problems with voice recorder, writing, and typing" ( http://juwo.com/details.html#Record) problem with writing? you cant get it into the computer.

"Your use case doesn't fit" When juwo is ported to a PDA, it will.

No. The problem isn't that juwo is a "new concept." In my opinion, your response to the previous post is demonstrative of your problem:

He said: "I don't understand what your product is." You said: "juwo has X functionalities and Y use cases." You didn't say: "juwo is a product that solves __(problem)__ for __(audience)__ by __(10 words max describing functionality)__."

_That_ is what people want to know when they ask about your product. _That_ is what needs to be on your home page, not 13 use cases and 300k of screenshots. For a product to be successful, it has to have a purpose. It has to solve a problem that somebody has.

I've been following your threads on news.yc for weeks, and I still have no idea whether your product has an actual purpose or is a useless collection of features. If the former, you need to do a much better job of communicating this to people. Otherwise, it's time to revisit the idea. Nobody's interested in a pile of useless features. And if you don't believe me, perhaps I could interest you in my tax prep software which organizes your photos and generates source code for text-based adventure games for the TI-83...

juwo solves 3 problems - by allowing you to create, play, distribute, add to, share lists of snippets. Rather than state what the problems are, I simply created the demos to show what it can do.

it can do about 5-8 different things. So there are about 13 use cases with demos listed

Pick one (compelling) thing and promote that, first and foremost.

If you start to get a user base, then you can gradually introduce some of the other features.

As a friend of mine said: "The Burton snowboard web site is the only reason I bothered to get Flash working in my browser".

You need to find a similar dynamic for juwo, otherwise people are not going to take the time to download or install anything.

I am trying to get students in the dental school to use it - several carry laptops to class. They can juwo lectures.

-------------

The problem is - to get it to work offline using flash, I must use apollo. It may come with the same problems that Java Web Start did - only, we dont know them yet.

-------------

Any of you guys on this page want to join me in working on juwo?

"1) screen shots 2) Demo 3) How to buy"

what about the user understanding the concept and learning how to use - isnt that important and where will I fit it?

I'm scared of what the demo will do to my machine.

It wont do anything, I promise. At worst, it may hang the machine.

Your files are untouched - only juwo files and config files are written.

You can uninstall using Add|Remove Programs
