To me, Google Reader ended up being more of a backend, just because some of the other dedicated readers were so nice. Can't say I've tried Newsblur, but my favorite ended up being Reeder. I don't think that shutdown changed anything for me except switching the backend to Feedly instead... (maybe I'll try Newsblur...)
