Unfortunately things don't pan out well when moved out of the lab conditions and into the real world, with kilometres of twisted, rotting copper buried in the ground in awful conditions.
Usually there is a choice between proprietary "pre-standard" products that come out pretty quickly or standards-based products that take years to arrive. This allows customers to make the time-to-market vs. lock-in tradeoff.
From the little I understand, it's also likely that a patent like this would be bought up by some company which would find the technology disruptive (competitive) to their current business, just to keep it out of the market.
When was the last time you heard of or saw something cool but never heard of it ever again?
