I would fault Apple. If there was a separate section for curated indie games it would be cool. I am sure Sony and Valve think this way.
Overall my opinion is that subj game has a very niche appeal. I agree that it's better to use something like MonoGame or maybe Unity to have an option to target all platforms (it's not all easy, but iOS-only just doesn't seem like a good option anymore). It seems that the alternative solution is to take all the risk and maximize the polish then talk to publisher - what Little Thief and Ice Breaker did.
