Presumably this is because China wants to force their AI companies to build on native chips from Huawei and others. That makes sense. Their chips aren’t far behind anyways - sure you need more of them but so what? If you can train a model that’s less than 6 months behind the very best then it doesn’t matter for practical purposes. May as well push for sovereignty, especially after the recent aggression and imperialism from Trump’s America.
