I was inspired to make this after seeing the "markwhen" project on the HN front page.
I did a first iteration using markwhen but found it was not exactly what I wanted. I didn't really want the page to allow interactive editing, and the default zoom level was not really suitable for such a large time range. (Plus I couldn't work out how to input dates before 0 AD).
