Your points are valid, but we also have to factor in the amount of electricity consumed by gen X chip vs gen X+1 chip to perform certain amount of computing during their lifetime.


Also don't forget the amount of energy required to deliver it to your house, and the fact that energy is probably more carbon-intensive than the energy powering your old CPU.
