Having recently acquired an e-ink bookreader, or more accurately, an Android tablet with an e-ink display that functions principally as a bookreader, I'm becoming aware of the differences, benefits, and limitations between active colour displays and electronic paper.
What I'm not finding are references to designing for or with e-ink in mind, and I'm wondering if I'm simply missing something or if the field really is largely ignored. I'm not finding, say, an "e-ink" or "e-paper" CSS media query, though color rules might apply.
The pixel density, power consumption, and daylight-readability of e-ink is impressive. The low refresh rates, lack of colour distinction (on this device, there are colour e-ink products now available), and other quirks create challenges when using either apps or documents in which other features are assumed. Given various projects such as the DIY e-ink laptop mentioned recently on HN, there does seem to be at least a possibility of wider adoption.
