I have a feeling that we'll see new wifi-emitting hubs from Apple in the near-term. They just won't be what we conventionally think of as routers, and will feature a host of new features to support a new ecosystem of Apple products for the connected home. e.g. thermostats. The new centralized hubs will be different enough in concept from airports to support abandoning the airport line completely.
