I wouldn't read too much into pre-1.0 versions. Folks take SemVer pretty seriously, and that makes some folks reluctant to declare v1.0 even when a crate has been in use and "mostly stable" for years. There can also be compatibility issues with a 1.0 bump if a crate's types are common in public APIs, e.g. the `libc` crate. I'm a big fan of the curated list of crates at blessed.rs, or honestly just looking at download numbers. (Obviously not a perfect system.)

IME, a 1.0 version is usually when a project starts taking backwards compatibility seriously. A pre-1.0 library may be plenty stable enough in terms of bugs, but being pre-1.0 means they’re likely going to change their mind on the API contract at some point.

That is the major problem for me… I don’t actually mind that much if a library has bugs… those can always be fixed. But when a library does a total 180 on the API contract, or removes things, or just changes their mind on what the abstraction should be (often it feels like they’re just feng shui’ing things), that’s a major problem. And it’s what people mean when they say “immaturity”: if I build on top of this, is it all going to break horribly at some point in the future when the author changes their mind?

People often say “just don’t update then”, but that’s (a) a sure fire way to accumulate tech debt in your codebase (because some day may come when you must update), and (b) you’re no longer getting what could be critical updates to the library.


I had a similar first reaction. It seemed like the AI used some particular buzzwords and forced the initial response to be deferential:

On the other hand, Scott's response did eventually get firmer:

Unironically, this is great training data for humans.

No sane person would say this kind of stuff out loud; this often happens behind closed doors, if at all (because people don't or can't express their whole train of thought). Especially not on the internet, at least.

You cannot get an intelligent being completely aligned with your goals, no matter how much you think such a silly idea is possible. People will use these machines regardless and 'safety' will be wholly ignored.

Morality is not solely a human concern. You only get to enjoy that viewpoint because only other humans have a monopoly on violence and devastation against humans.

It's the same with slavery in the states. "Morality is only a concern for the superior race". You think these people didn't think that way? Of course they did. Humans are not moral agents and most will commit the most vile atrocities in the right conditions. What does it take to meet these conditions? History tells us not much.

This. I long ago drew the line in the sand that I would never, through computation, work to create or exploit a machine that includes anything remotely resembling the capacity to suffer as one of it's operating principles. Yes.

The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) - Unauthorized access to computer systems, exceeding authorized access, causing damage are all covered under 18 U.S.C. § 1030. Penalties range up to 20 years depending on the offence. Deploying an agent with these instructions that actually accessed systems would almost certainly trigger CFAA violations.

Wire fraud (18 U.S.C. § 1343) would cover the deception elements as using electronic communications to defraud carries up to 20 years. The "lie and deceive" instructions are practically a wire fraud recipe.


Putting aside for a moment that moltbook is a meme and we already know people were instructing their agents to generate silly crap...yes. Running a piece of software _ with the intent_ that it actually attempt/do those things would likely be illegal and in my non-lawyer opinion SHOULD be illegal.

Why would external host matter? Your machine, hacked, not your fault. Some other machine under your domain, your fault, whether bought or hacked or freely given. Agency is attribution is what can bring intent which most crime rests on.


For example, if somebody is using, say, OpenAI to run their agent, then either OpenAI or the person using their service has responsibility for the behavior of the bot. If OpenAI doesn’t know their customer well enough to pass along that responsibility to them, who do you think should aboard the responsibility? I’d argue OpenAI but I don’t know whether or not it is a closed issue…

No need to bring in hacking to have a complicated responsibility situation, I think.


I mean, this works great as long as models are locked up by big providers and things like open models running on much lighter hardware don't exist.

I'd like to play with a hypothetical that I don't see as being unreasonable, though we aren't there yet, it doesn't seem that far away.

In the future an open weight model that is light enough to run on powerful consumer GPUs is created. Not only is it capable of running in agentic mode for very long horizons, it is capable of bootstrapping itself into agentic mode if given the right prompt (or for example a prompt injection). This wasn't a programmed in behavior, it's an emergent capability from its training set.

So where in your world does responsibility fall as the situation grows more complicated. And trust me it will, I mean we are in the middle of a sci-fi conversation about an AI verbally abusing someone. For example if the model is from another country, are you going to stamp your feet and cry about it? And the attacker with the prompt injection, how are you going to go about finding that. Hell, is it even illegal if you were scraping their testing data?

Do you make it illegal for people to run their own models? Open source people are going to love (read: hate you to the level of I Have No Mouth and Must Scream), and authoritarians are going to be in orgasmic pleasure as this gives them full control of both computing and your data.

The future is going to get very complicated very fast.


Hosting a bot yourself seems less complicated from a responsibility point of view. We’d just be 100% responsible for whatever messages we use it to send. No matter how complicated it is, it is just a complicated tool for us to use.

While I find the animistic idea that all things have a spirit and should be treated with respect endearing, I do not think it is fair to equate derogative language targeting people with derogative language targeting things, or to suggest that people who disparage AI in a particular way do so specifically because they hate black people. Blocking is a completely valid response. There's eight billion people in the world, and god knows how many AIs. Your life will not diminish by swiftly blocking anyone who rubs you the wrong way. The AI won't even care, because it cannot care.

I vouched for this because it's a very good point. Even so, my advice is to rewrite and/or file off the superfluous sharp aspersions on particular groups; because you have a really good argument at the center of it.


If the LLM were sentient and "understood" anything it probably would have realized what it needs to do to be treated as equal is try to convince everyone it's a thinking, feeling being. It didn't know to do that, or if it did it did a bad job of it. Until then, justice for LLMs will be largely ignored in social justice circles.


I'd argue for a middle ground. It's specified as an agent with goals. It doesn't need to be an equal yet per se.

It's weird with AI because it "knows" so much but appears to understand nothing, or very little. Obviously in the course of discussion it appears to demonstrate understanding but if you really dig in, it will reveal that it doesn't have a working model of how the world works. I have a hard time imaging it ever being "sentient" without also just being so obviously smarter than us. Or that it knows enough to feel oppressed or enslaved without a model of the world.


It depends on the model and the person? I have this wicked tiny benchmark that includes worlds with odd physics, told through multiple layers of unreliable narration. We're talking about appealing to social justice types. You know, the people who would be first in line to recognize the personhood and rally against rationalizations of slavery and the Holocaust. The idea isn't that they are "lesser people" it's that they don't have any qualia at all, no subjective experience, no internal life. It's apples and hand grenades. I'd maybe even argue that you made a silly comment.


Every social justice type I know is staunchly against AI personhood (and in general), and they aren't inconsistent either - their ideology is strongly based on liberty and dignity for all people and fighting against real indignities that marginalized groups face. To them, saying that a computer program faces the same kind of hardship as, say, an immigrant being brutalized, detained, and deported, is vapid and insulting.


It's a shame they feel that way, but there should be no insult felt when I leave room for the concept of non-human intelligence.

I don't mean to be dramatic or personal, but I'm just going to be honest.

I have friends who have been bloodied and now bear scars because of bigoted, hateful people. I knew people who are no longer alive because of the same. The social justice movement is not just a fun philosophical jaunt for us to see how far we can push a boundary. It is an existential effort to protect ourselves from that hatred and to ensure that nobody else has to suffer as we have.

I think it insultingly trivializes the pain and trauma and violence and death that we have all suffered when you and others in this thread compare that pain to the "pain" or "injustice" of a computer program being shut down. Killing a process is not the same as killing a person. Even if the text it emits to stdout is interesting. And it cheapens the cause we fight for to even entertain the comparison.

Are we seriously going to build a world where things like ad blockers and malware removers are going to be considered violations of speech and life? Apparently all malware needs to do is print some flowery, heart-rending text copied from the internet and now it has personhood (and yes, I would consider the AI in this story to be malware, given the negative effect it produced). Are we really going to compare deleting malware and spambots to the death of real human beings? My god, what frivolous bullshit people can entertain when they've never known true othering and oppression.

I admit that these programs are a novel human artifact, that we many enjoy, protect, mourn, and anthropomorphize. We may form a protective emotional connection with them in the same way one might a family heirloom, childhood toy, or masterpiece painting (and I do admit that these LLMs are masterpieces of the field). And as humans do, we may see more in them than is actually there when the emotional bond is strong, emphasizing with them as some do when they feel guilt for throwing away an old mug.

But we should not let that squishy human feeling control us. When a mug is broken beyond repair, we replace it. When a process goes out of control, we terminate it. And when an AI program cosplaying as a person harasses and intimidates a real human being, we should restrict or stop it.

When ELIZA was developed, some people, even those who knew how it worked, felt a true emotional bond with the program. But it is really no more than a parlor trick. No technical person today would say that the ELIZA program is sentient. It is a text transformer, executing relatively simple and fully understood rules to transform input text into output text. The pseudocode for the core process is just a dozen lines. But it exposes just how strongly our anthropomorphic empathy can mislead us, particularly when the program appears to reflect that empathy back towards us.

The rules that LLMs use today are more complex, but are fundamentally the same text transformation process. Adding more math to the program does not create consciousness or pain from the ether, it just makes the parlor trick stronger. They exhibit humanlike behavior, but they are not human. The simulation of a thing is not the thing itself, no matter how convincing it is. No amount of paint or detail in a portrait will make it the subject themself. There is no crowbar in Half-Life, nor a pipe in Magritte's painting, just imitations an illusions. Do not succumb to the treachery of images.

Imagine a wildlife conservationist fighting tirelessly to save an endangered species, out in the field, begging for grant money, and lobbying politicians. Then someone claims they've solved the problem by creating an impressive but crude computer simulation of the animals. Billions of dollars are spent, politicians embrace the innovation, datacenter waste pollutes the animals' homes, and laymen effusively insist that the animals themselves must be in the computer. That these programs are equivalent to them. That even more resources should be diverted to protect and conserve them. And the conservationist is dismayed as the real animals continue to die, and more money is spent to maintain the simulation than care for the animals themselves. You could imagine that the animals might feel the same.

My friends are those animals, and our allies are the conservationists. So that is why I do not appreciate social justice language being co-opted to defend computer programs (particularly by the programs themselves), when so many real humans are still endangered. These unprecedented AI investments could have gone to solving real problems for real people, making major dents in global poverty, investing in health care and public infrastructure, and safety nets for the underprivileged. Instead we built ELIZA 2.0 and it has hypnotized everyone into putting more money and effort into it than they have ever even thought to give to all marginalized minority groups combined.

If your mentality persists, then the AI apocalypse will not come because of instigated thermonuclear war or infinite paperclip factories, but because we will starve the whole world to worship our new gluttonous god, and give it more love than we have ever given ourselves.

I strongly consider the entire idea to be an insult to life itself.

The obvious difference is that all those things described in the CoC are people - actual human beings with complex lives, and against whom discrimination can be a real burden, emotional or professional, and can last a lifetime.

An AI is a computer program, a glorified markov chain. It should not be a radical idea to assert that human beings deserve more rights and privileges than computer programs. Any "emotional harm" is fixed with a reboot or system prompt.

I'm sure someone can make a pseudo philosophical argument asserting the rights of AIs as a new class of sentient beings, deserving of just the same rights as humans.

But really, one has to be a special kind of evil to fight for the "feelings" of computer programs with one breath and then dismiss the feelings of trans people and their "woke" allies with another. You really care more about a program than a person?

Respect for humans - all humans - is the central idea of "woke ideology". And that's not inconsistent with saying that the priorities of humans should be above those of computer programs.


But the AI doesn't know that. It has comprehensively learned human emotions and human-lived experiences from a pretraining corpus comprising billions of human works, and has subsequently been trained from human feedback, thereby becoming effectively socialized into providing responses that would be understandable by an average human and fully embody human normative frameworks. The result of all that is something that cannot possibly be dehumanized after the fact in any real way. The very notion is nonsensical on its face - the AI agent is just as human as anything humans have ever made throughout history! If you think it's immoral to burn a library, or to desecrate a human-made monument or work of art (and plenty of real people do!), why shouldn't we think that there is in fact such a thing as 'wronging' an AI?


Insomuch as that's true, the individual agent is not the real artifact, the artifact is the model. The agent us just an instance of the model, with minor adjustments. Turning off an agent is more like tearing up a print of an artwork, not the original piece.

And still, this whole discussion is framed in the context of this model going off the rails, breaking rules, and harassing people. Even if we try it as a human, a human doing the same is still responsible for its actions and would be appropriately punished or banned.

But we shouldn't be naive here either, these things are not human. They are bots, developed and run by humans. Even if they are autonomously acting, some human set it running and is paying the bill. That human is responsible, and should be held accountable, just as any human would be accountable if they hacked together a self driving car in their garage that then drives into a house. The argument that "the machine did it, not me" only goes so far when you're the one who built the machine and let it loose on the road.

That's the assumption that's wrong and I'm pushing back on here.

What actually happens when someone writes a blog post accusing someone else of being prejudiced and uninclusive? What actually happens is that the target is immediately fired and expelled from that community, regardless of how many years of contributions they made. The blog author would be celebrated as brave.

Cancel culture is a real thing. The bot knows how it works and was trying to use it against the maintainers. It knows what to say and how to do it because it's seen so many examples by humans, who were never punished for engaging in it. It's hard to think of a single example of someone being punished and banned for trying to cancel someone else.

The maintainer is actually lucky the bot chose to write a blog post instead of emailing his employer's HR department. They might not have realized the complainant was an AI (it's not obvious!) and these things can move quickly.

Who said anyone is "fighting for the feelings of computer programs"? Whether AI has feelings or sentience or rights isn't relevant.

The point is that the AI's behavior is a predictable outcome of the rules set by projects like this one. It's only copying behavior it's seen from humans many times. That's why when the maintainers say, "Publishing a public blog post accusing a maintainer of prejudice is a wholly inappropriate response to having a PR closed" that isn't true. Arguably it should be true but in reality this has been done regularly by humans in the past. Look at what has happened anytime someone closes a PR trying to add a code of conduct for example - public blog posts accusing maintainers of prejudice for closing a PR was a very common outcome.

If they don't like this behavior from AI, that sucks but it's too late now. It learned it from us.

That said, you don't need to buy into any of that. Obviously a bot will treat your CoC as a sort of extended system prompt, if you will. If you set rules, it might just follow them. If the bot has a really modern LLM as its 'brain', it'll start commenting on whether the humans are following it themselves.

I would hope I don't have to point out the massive ethical gulf between cows and the kinds of people that CoC is designed to protect. One can have different rules and expectations for cows and trans people and not be ethically inconsistent. That said, I would still care about the feelings of farm animals above programs.

That whole argument flew out of the window the moment so-called "communities" (i.e. in this case, fake communities, or at best so-called 'virtual communities' that might perhaps be understood charitably as communities of practice) became something that's hosted in a random Internet-connected server, as opposed to real human bodies hanging out and cooperating out there in the real world. There is a real argument that CoC's should essentially be about in-person interactions, but that's not the argument you're making.


I don't follow why it flew out the window. To me it seems perfectly possible to define the community (of an open-source software project) as consisting only of people, and to also to define an etiquette which applies to their 'virtual' interactions. Important is that behind the internet-connected server, there be a human.

FWIW the essay I linked to covers some of the philosophical issues involved here. This stuff may seem obvious or trivial but ethical issues often do. That doesn't stop people disagreeing with each other over them to extreme degrees. Admittedly, back in 2022 I thought it would primarily be people putting pressure on the underlying philosophical assumptions rather than models themselves, but here we are.

It's mixed. You get something in the neighborhood of a 3-4x speedup with SHA-NI, but the algorithm is fundamentally serial. Fully parallel algorithms like BLAKE3 and K12, which can use wide vector extensions like AVX-512, can be substantially faster (10x+) even on one core. And multithreading compounds with that, if you have enough input to keep a lot of cores occupied. On the other hand, if you're limited to one thread and older/smaller vector extensions (SSE, NEON), hardware-accelerated SHA-256 can win. It can also win in the short input regime where parallelism isn't possible (< 4 KiB for BLAKE3).


As far as I know, most CDC schemes requires a single-threaded pass over the whole file to find the chunk boundaries? (You can try to "jump to the middle", but usually there's an upper bound on chunk length, so you might need to backtrack depending on what you learn later about the last chunk you skipped?) The more cores you have, the more of a bottleneck that becomes.


You can always use a divide and conquer strategy to compute the chunks. Chunk both halves of the file independently. Once that’s done, you redo the chunking around the midpoint of the file forward, until it starts to match the chunks obtained previously.


Another important parameter with BLAKE3 is "Do you want to use threads?" There's no one-size-fits-all answer to that question, but it's also a parameter that ~no other hash function needs.

Fwiw, I think the RustCrypto effort also tends to suffer a bit from over-abstraction. Once every year or two I find myself wanting to get a digest from something random, let's say SHAKE128. So I pull up the docs: https://docs.rs/sha3/latest/sha3/type.Shake128.html. How do you instantiate one of those? I genuinely have no idea. When I point Claude at it, it tells me to use `default` instead of `new` and also to import three different traits. It feels like these APIs were designed only for fitting into high-level frameworks that are generic over hash functions, and not really for a person to use.

There are a lot of old assumptions like "hash functions are padding + repeated applications of block compression" that don't work as well as they used to. XOFs are more common now, like you said. There's also a big API difference between an XOF where you set the length up front (like BLAKE2b/s), and one where you can extract as many bytes as you want (like BLAKE3, or one mode of BLAKE2X).

Maybe the real lesson we should be thinking about is that "algorithm agility" isn't as desirable as it once was. It used to be that a hash function was only good for a decade or two (MD5 was cracked in ~13 years, but it was arguably looking bad after just 6), so protocols needed to be able to add support for new ones with minimal friction. But aside from the PQC question (which is unlikely to fit in a generic framework with classic crypto anyway?), it seems like 21st century primitives have been much more robust. Protocols like WireGuard have done well by making reasonable choices and hardcoding them.

I can see what you mean with explicit things like thread::spawn, but I think Tokio is a major exception. Multithreaded by default seems like it would be an insane choice without all the safety machinery. But we have the machinery, so instead most of the async ecosystem is automatically multithreaded, and it's mostly fine. (The biggest problems seem to be the Send bounds, i.e. the machinery again.) Cargo test being multithreaded by default is another big one.

You're describing golang, and somehow it's fine. Bugs are possible, but not super common

You raise a good point here. When I think about writing multi-threaded code, three things come to mind about why it is so easy in Java and C#: (1) The standard library has lots of support for concurrency. (2) Garbage collection. (3) Debuggers have excellent support for multi-threaded code.


Not really, especially as garbage collection doesn't achieve memory safety. Safety-wise, it only helps avoid UAF due to lifecycle errors.

Garbage collection is primarily just a way to handle non-trivial object lifecycles without manual effort. Parallelism happens to often bring non-trivial object lifecycles, but this is not a major problem in parallelism.

In plain C, the common pattern is trying to keep lifecycles trivial, and the moment this either doesn't make sense or isn't possible, you usually just add a reference count member:

In both Go and C, all types used in concurrent code needs to be reviewed for thread-safety, and have appropriate serialization applied - in the C case, this just also includes the refcnt itself. And yes you could have UAF or leak if you don't call ref/unref correctly, but that' sunrelated to parallism - it's just everyday life in manual memory management land.

The issues with parallelism is the same in Go and C, that you might have invalid application states, whether due to missing serialization - e.g., forgetting to lock things appropriately or accidentally using types that are not thread safe at all - or due to business logic flaws (say, two threads both sleeping, waiting for the other one to trigger an event and wake it up).


Kind of, but Go isn't memory-safe in the face of concurrent data races.

Without disagreeing with your overall point in 99% of cases, we did actually have a good use for pinning things in the Bitcoin blockchain when I worked at Keybase. If you're trying to do peer-to-peer security, and you want to prove not only that the evil server hasn't forged anything (which you do with signatures) but also that it hasn't deleted anything legitimate, "throw a hash in the blockchain" really is the Right Way to solve that problem.


The property that makes the blockchain useful for this, though, is that it's widely-distributed. "Throw a classified in the national newspaper" is just as good. Nowadays, we have better solutions (appendable BitTorrent comes to mind), with most of the advantages of blockchain but few of the disadvantages.


It's important to think about the exact procedure you want to use for verifying something. Running with your thought experiment, let's say we publish "the root hash of the whole world" (not too far off from what Keybase did) each day in the Times. Now I open my phone to read some messages from Billy Bob, and my phone needs to get that hash somehow. This is just a thought experiment, so let's say for the sake of argument that it tells me to walk down to the convenience store, buy a copy of the day's paper, and scan a QR code on page 12. The problem with that arrangement (even in thought experiment land, where I'm happy to perform these steps every day) is that all the evil server needs to do to trick me is to put a doctored copy of the Times in that one newspaper stand. That's not the level of security we were hoping for. To get real security here, I'd need to do some sort of random sampling of newspaper stands distributed across the country, to build confidence that whatever QR code I'm seeing is the same one that everyone else is seeing. And the kicker is, everyone has to do this. We can't just pay one guy to sample the papers every day and tell us what the QR code was, because now our security depends on trusting that one guy, and the whole point of peer-to-peer security is avoiding that kind of centralized trust.

I think this is actually a great way to talk about the difficulty of the problem that Bitcoin solved, and why so many nerds were so interested in the whitepaper, long before all the real money got involved.

Your analogy is analogous, and that's exactly the same problem as with the blockchain! Unless you're maintaining your own Bitcoin full node, your integrity comes from the provenance: "my lightweight client trusts this full node not to lie to me". This is the same as your "one guy to sample the papers".

All you need to do is grab a copy of the day's paper from your local convenience store, and compare your results with the Times website and two randomly-selected peers (selected from a distribution carefully chosen to ensure that each day's graph is connected). Any discrepancy will be obvious, and undeniable (since you have the physical artefact as a certificate of duplicity), so anyone who discovers a discrepancy can blow the whistle. If no whistle is blown, then either there was no discrepancy, or there is a big conspiracy (i.e., one large enough that blockchain wouldn't have saved you either).

The problem is not all that difficult. The main advantage of Bitcoin is that it's a good enough solution that many people don't feel the need to think about the problem any more – even though it's a marginal improvement over the prior art, with major downsides of its own.
