At age 50, after a successful non-technical career, I took a few college classes and then went to a bootcamp. The bootcamp got me an internship (a bit humbling but it got me in the door) and I have been programming ever since. I will turn 60 this year and I am pretty sure I could do the same thing today that I did 10ish years ago. It was not always easy and I probably got a few lucky breaks along the way, but I would not discourage anyone from exploring the possibility.
Africa has been the hardest hit. Progress has been made in reducing deaths in recent years, but millions is not an exaggeration and children have often been the victims. While most of us have a negative attitude towards DDT because of its impact on the wildlife, it did play an important role in controlling mosquitoes and reducing malaria infections in the past.
It's been the case for a little while. /r/vandwellers has been getting busier and busier, with a lot of new builds. Once you've seen a couple of dozen different builds there, you start recognizing the vehicles on the road everywhere else.
It seems to be an aggregation of a few different communities. There are some people doing it because they can't afford anything else, but also a lot of people who just want a cheap way to travel for a while, people who are dumping tons of money into their builds so that they can join the Instagram community of outdoor photos from the back of your van, and folks who make okay money but want to spend as much time climbing as possible.
So it's probably a little bit related to rising housing costs, but that's not all of it.
So true. I clicked on the link thinking that it had something to do with Amazon deliveries at campgrounds/RV parks for people on vacation, only to find out that my default level of cynicism is woefully inadequate.
Median is better than mean though. Preferably, the people with the data would release median, mean, and quintiles or deciles, and the actual data itself for better analysis.
I'm also doubtful about the management of hosts. Yesterday, an Airbnb Superhost cancelled my upcoming reservation without explanation. I booked with a hotel and saved about $25. Airbnb has been my first choice for awhile. I think it is going to be my back up choice for the near future.
Last weekend I attempted to use airbnb in Orlando. Originally the host said the door would be unlocked, but when we arrived it was locked. It was a keypad lock so we wrote the host and asked for the code. He wrote back and sent a code that didn't work. When we informed him the code didn't work his response was, really? We never heard from him again that night or since asking for a refund.
We stayed in a hotel nearby that cost about $30 more, but had free breakfast.
I will go for hotels first in the future. I never had any issues with airbnb in the past, but one night of waiting around to hear from the host (and never actually gaining entry) with a family of tired people is one too many.
I had the same issue. An Airbnb host cancelled our reservation the day before our booking was supposed to start and Airbnb didn't help us out at all. We ended up paying quite a bit more for a hotel, but after going through that I'm happy to pay more in the future for professionalism and a guaranteed bed.
CCL is a great organization. I joined after the election because I was really upset and could either mope or get involved with something important to me. I like the fact that CCL has a non-partisan or bi-partisan proposal and that it sincerely works both sides of the aisle. Our country has societal problems and it's got political problems. CCL is trying to address them both.
I have been struck by the number of accounts supporting Trump that appear to be either bots or part of a slick marketing campaign. Many of them have glossy photoshopped backgrounds that include Trump, Pence and American imagery. The tweets are vociferous and highly partisan. It's actually a little overwhelming and has pushed me away from the platform.
Today, my wife, who is an American citizen of Indian origin, told me she is afraid to travel around town without her passport. We read stories like this and about broad ICE raids and the shooting in Kansas and it begins to take a toll.
