China is rapidly going green.

Is the US even more rapidly going green? https://ourworldindata.org/explorers/co2?hideControls=false&...

China's emissions were 10 billion tons CO2 in 2017 and have increased every single year to 12.29 billion tons CO2 in 2024. Meanwhile, US decreased from 5.22 to 4.9 in the same time

Both these trends have reversed in 2025.

US emissions icreased by 2.5% https://rhg.com/research/us-greenhouse-gas-emissions-2025/

China's emmisions have decreased by <1% https://e360.yale.edu/digest/china-emissions-decline

1/4 the population. Per capita we are 65% worse not considering how much of China's pollution is on our behalf

Yeah, and don't even get me started on historic emissions.

China has only produced significant CO2/capita in the last decade. The US and Europe are responsible for the accumulated GHG that have gotten us into the current mess. We blew nearly the entire CO2 "budget" for keeping us under 2C of warming, just by ourselves, so it's kinda odd to be pointing fingers at the foreigners who are just now halfway catching up to what we're emitting now.

But those historic emissions have also produced scientific and engineering progress that other developing nations got to piggyback off of for their development.

Aye, true, but we also then have a responsibility to produce scientific and engineering progress to get off of fossil fuels. And then to follow through, and get off fossil fuels.

I’m in favor of amnesty only because we have allowed employers and households to hire people without immigration status for decades. It’s absurd to punish the supply of labor and not the demand of it. At this point entire key sectors of our economy cannot function without illegal immigrants. Randomly punishing a small percentage of illegal immigrants does nothing to change that reality - and so it’s just performative pain rather than a solution.

We also as a democracy simply cannot allow the status quo of a permanent underclass of non-voting residents to be a large percentage of our population. It’s corrosive to have different classes of people with different labor protection rules, wages, etc. There simply is not a clean path forward that doesn’t involve some kind of amnesty simply because seeking justice would be a humanitarian and economic crisis.

Amnesty might not be justice, but as a nation it’s our penance for decades of destabilizing our neighbors and allowing this situation to continue. Let’s get a reasonable immigration system in place and move forward.

The Nazis didn’t start by massacring ethnic (and political, sexual, and religious) minorities. They started by massacring mentally handicapped people.

But then they made noises about getting rid of undesirable people by shipping them out of the country. Prior to that plenty of dehumanizing rhetoric that Trump and others eerily echo. It was only after the forced deportations didn’t pan out that ghettos started. Then detention camps. And finally extermination centers.

It’s very reasonable to look events which appear similar to the start of genocides and decry them.

Regardless of if there ought to be some sort of consequences for a civil (not criminal) infraction, the consequences shouldn’t fall on a 9 yo girl. I have no idea how the operators of the for profit detention center sleep at night.

Usually receiving a green card forgives any visa overstays. Because she married a US Citizen she would almost assuredly have received the green card. The months of suffering of a little girl are just due to a delay in a bureaucracy approving some paperwork.

What was fabricated?

Digital letters of marque ought to be a thing.

Yeah this is more privateering than vigilantism.

It depends, if the political take is sufficiently shitty it’s a betrayal of your morals, friends etc to continue to associate with your family spouting it.

Typically that has to be some extreme form of bigotry people won’t let go of after repeated coaching. Extreme bigotry or conspiracy thinking is arguably a form of abuse directed at other family members and it’s 100% ok to cut people off for being abusive.

I’ll comment before this inevitably gets flagged.

Federal agents intimidating a sitting governor is an affront to the United States federal system. Anyone failing to protest this only reveals they have no actual allegiance to federalism and only ever view it as a useful tool to bang on when they are not in power in Washington.

We are in deeply dangerous waters as a country.

True. However, I think it’s important to note that the governor refused to be intimidated and continued mocking Trump on social media. I don’t always agree with Newsom’s politics but I sure like the fact that he reuses to bend the knee to Trump.

I'm much more willing to grant Newsom leeway, these days.

I think his logic is sound, for the redistricting response in California that he's threatening, for example.

Unity is a force multiplayer, too, so I'll grant my support until we get through this authoritarian flu.

Potential buyers should also be aware the fountain pen community on Reddit has soured massively on Goulet.

In addition to deteriorating service and slow shipping concerns compared to alternatives, there’s a view that purchasing from the company directly funds anti-LGBTQ owners and organizations. The owners cofounded a branch of a church whose pastor made wildly anti-LGBTQ remarks. The response to the controversy was not well handled by the Goulets (essentially radio silence then an highly misleading statement). The controversy came around the same time a well beloved podcast employee Drew was fired.

There was also the prior controversy with Noodler’s Inks and the Gaulet’s rehabilitating him after anti-Semitic imagery was placed for a second time on his bottles.

Because so much of the original megathread was deleted (whole lot of subreddit moderation drama occurred because of this incident) I’m linking a later summary for those curious.

If the business is going downhill then that's one thing. I wouldn't know; I am not in the habit of asking retailers to price-match a 33% discount and it was an impulse buy in any case, so it's been a couple years since I ordered a pen from Brian. If his company disappoints me, of course I will say so.

Beliefs in public are another matter in the United States, where I have spent my life a citizen. It is for like cause my privilege to take this rather childish campaign of character assassination exactly as seriously as it deserves.

Oh sure, the SBC has been industriously covering a Catholic-grade child sex abuse scandal since some time early last year. But the SBC also by design, being effectively a 501(c) something-or-other front and to my view encompassed by RICO, isn't really capable of responding; the appropriately equipped organizations would be the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Absent their involvement, and even in light of their present and ongoing compromise, am I meant to imagine Reddit is better in this regard? Good grief, that place has been as bad as the worst you hear of Discord now, and nothing out of Reddit's ownership or the regulatory environment suggests meaningful intent to do better.

But what do I know? I'm just a dumb old redneck homo who came out of Mississippi, 'trade' being one term I have heard along the way. Of course it's the just role of the fancy folk with leisure for literacy, like you, to instruct my brute if decent kind of our proper role in things. You know, like your intellectual forebears, the antebellum Southern planters who so cozened my own poor ancestors and maintained them in their useful ignorance. I like to hope we're a little more clever this generation. Or more continent in where we place our trust, at least.

Not necessarily, there are still lenses being produced today with vignetting, especially wide open.

Avoiding vignetting is a trade off between complexity, cost, weight, and other optical flaws. That said modern optical design and manufacturing has made it a lot easier to have nearly flawless (clinical) designs.
