People who have grown to know and love ad blocking will move en masse to Firefox. That would be a good thing.

The attempt to force users into a system they don't want when there are other options available results in a loss of users.

I’m not so sure about that. From a nontechnical users’s point of view, they aren’t entirely shutting down adblockers outright, but merely slightly inconveniencing them - most users will probably migrate to a different, less powerful ad blocker and just keep using Chrome. We’re all frogs in water while Google keeps raising the temperature just ever so slightly higher.

They should modify it so after launch it is based on active users. That will keep good things growing.

I expect the funding model for self driving taxis will be like validated parking. You ride free (or reduced) if you spend $x at whatever business, shopping mall, etc.

Why though? Even in places with cheap labor (so cheap drivers), they still don’t have things like that, taxis are just cheaper.

Because if I'm Safeway and I can get elderly people to come to my business (for shopping, prescriptions, etc.) they won't be shopping somewhere else. The business gains/retains the clientele by providing the driving service.

Just fund a minibus from the retirement home. I think many people do that already?

Ok, so it’s an interesting idea to use personal transit, but it could be done already without self driving vehicles, it might be economical. But it would be pretty niche.

It's just a thought, not a business plan :)

I think you're bang on - but it needn't be limited to driverless cars.

Honestly, I'm surprised it's not something that Google have already built heavily into Maps. People often search for what they want (e.g. burger, pizza) - this would be an obvious time to offer deals or discounts to drive customers to particular businesses. You then expand to compete with particular retailers - someone searches for Nike specifically, they get offers from the nearby Adidas store.

This is not really any different to what happens with Google searches, where advertisers can buy keywords related to their competitors.

Shouldn't it be enough that the taxi will only drive to one of the businesses that has sponsored it?

Why do you need self driving for this?

Reduced costs.

Use the ublock origin extension to remove the parts of Reddit that are annoying.

Use the picker to select the problem overlays and create a rule and they will be gone. You have to do this a few times since some seem to be page sensitive.

I have the Essential Phone and love it.

Here are some notes on building and installing Lineage OS on the Essential PH-1:

And some notes about setting up a phone without Google Play Services:

I hear this argument a lot but I disagree.

While some advertisements can alert you to a product that will be helpful, many have the psychological intent of producing dissatisfaction and are an attempt to compel you to purchase something you do not need and your life probably would be better off without. Advertising is deliberately about producing discontent and it makes people more unhappy and more dissatisfied with their lives.

I would rather see ads that I can immediately dismiss than have ones that make me start desiring that which I don't really need.

So you're just against advertising.

That's fine but I don't think there is an alternative business model that doesn't rely on advertising to feed the current demand of entertainment. I hope I'm wrong and people like you who find advertising distasteful can have access to the wealths of society with some alternative form of funding

I use LibreOffice and these appear as grey characters (at least some of the characters do). I've wondered what the grey characters were in the past and now I know.

Copy and paste the examples into LibreOffice and you will immediately see them.

I use mine almost exclusively for playing music. I just bought a second one and found they can sync play (which makes for a nice whole house audio solution for cheap). They also function as in house intercom.

I have no concerns over privacy. My web browsing habits and phone leak far more personal data to google.

> I have no concerns over privacy.

And that is your right. Where I have problems with this attitude is the question wether all those around you, family or guests you might have over, feel the same way. They're also impacted by this decision, yet they get no say in it.

I'm more concerned about people I know taking pictures of me and posting it all over Facebook and the rest of the internet. That is far more invasive than this Amazon device. I have no say in that.

As with most privacy things, there is particular privacy and general privacy. In particular, I don't think amazon or google have any intention of examining me. It is all just computer AI doing its thing. One in a sea of millions.

Spot on. You might choose to live without a smartphone and other devices but your peers are putting you under corporate surveillance without asking your permissions.

Almost everyone I know willingly puts themselves under corporate surveillance (credit card?, cell phone?, license plates on car?, web browser?, cable tv?, netflix?, shopper rewards and discounts?).

If you were in my house Amazon wouldn't even know it was you talking.

Almost everyone I know willingly puts themselves under corporate surveillance (credit card?, cell phone?, license plates on car?, web browser?, cable tv?, netflix?, shopper rewards and discounts?).

Still, everyone should be able to decide which corporate 'masters' they trust. For instance, Netflix may be surveying my watching habits, but I trust them more than Google and Amazon. They can only collect a small subset of data (viewing habits) and it least they get the majority of their income out of subscriptions. Over time, I have started making more principled choices of who I want to give my data and who not.

I don't think it is fair to ask that because I share data with Netflix, I should also be willing to share data with Google or Amazon when I visit you.

Unfortunately, this is only going to get worse. For example, there are a lot of cloud connected cameras with exploitable vulnerabilities. My parents had such a camera and I asked them to cover or disconnect it when I visit them.

The fact that we justify a privacy breach by comparing to even greater breaches makes me so uncomfortable.

Anker.

Yup, I've never had a problem with any of my Anker gear. Cables aren't as flimsy as most of the cheaper ones - they seem pretty sturdy - and their other stuff (I have a 5-port wall charger and a power bank) is top notch as well. I usually don't like advertising a brand like that, but they seem to be doing everything right so far and I'd buy it all again.

I like their charging products, but the cables have been failing at the connector...

Which kind of cable? If it's micro USB, they're designed to fail under low amounts of stress (thus sparing the much more difficult to replace port).

Unless handled with kid gloves, Micro USB cables from all manufacturer break easily.

I use Chrome and a plugin called Font Changer that lets one override fonts on pages. I don't need to have it turned on for all sites but it can be done. Mostly I just have everything set to Arial (I don't like reading any serif fonts on screen). Perhaps there is a plugin for Firefox that does a similar thing.
